Starting Tips for New Players

  1. Start Small

Start playing at the ₱10-₱50 tables, errors couldn’t possibly hurt your wallet that much in size. Play the small stakes, get used to the game, how people play. Only start moving up when you have been winning more than losing for a few weeks.

  1. Play Tight

Early Most poker hands are trash. You’ll be dealt trash much more often than you’ll be dealt good hands.
Newbies commit the same error – they enter way too many hands due to boredom or they’re not patient enough.
Wait for good cards Wait for good cards.
Big pairs (AA, KK, QQ, JJ) Ace-King Ace-Queen (a lot if they’re the same suit) High suitable cards (KQ, QJ of a suit) Everything else? Fold it. Yeah, I know it’s tedious to fold 7 hands in a row. But that’s poker The player who folds the most bad hands usually wins in the long run.

  1. Position

Matters Your Seat at the Table Changes Everything. The reason you have a huge edge if you act last (the “button”) is that you can see what everyone else does before you do. Same cards, different position = completely different play. A hand that is trash in late position might be playable in early position.

  1. Watch Your Opponents

He plays every hand? That loose guy on your right? Wait for a good hand and take his money.
This woman who just gets her hands dirty with once every 10 hands? When she bets, she’s got to have a pretty strong hand. Make way for the cops, unless you got the goods.
The guy who bets big on every hand? He’s all-in or he’s bluffing like a sonofabitch. Test him and get a measurement.

  1. Manage Your Bankroll

Basic IRS Rule: Don’t ever play on a table with more than you’re allowed to lose in the entire game.
If you only have ₱2,000 in your account, don’t play at a table above ₱100. Have ₱10,000? Max ₱500 per table.
Why? Because poker has swings. You can play perfect and still lose. Bad beats happen. Someone hits a lucky card on the river and takes your whole stack. Protect yourself from the swings.

  1. Don’t Chase Losses

You lose ₱500. You’re frustrated. You’re thinking “I’ll win it back this hand.” So you’re playing loose, calling badly, shoving with crap hands. If lose, close the app, take a walk. They’re back tomorrow with a clear head.
